In-Home Personal Training FAQ: Everything You Need to Know

Thinking about hiring an in-home personal trainer but not sure how it works? Here’s every question I get asked — answered straight, no sales pitch.

The Basics

How does in-home personal training actually work?

Simple. You book a session. Your trainer shows up at your door at the scheduled time with any equipment needed. You train for 60 minutes. Trainer leaves. You’re done. No driving, no changing, no gym bag.

Do I need equipment?

No. A good in-home trainer brings portable equipment — resistance bands, dumbbells, kettlebells, sliders, whatever the session calls for. Most clients start with zero and build their setup over time.

How much space do I need?

About the size of a yoga mat plus a few feet on each side. A living room, garage, basement, or even a large bedroom works. Your trainer will adapt exercises to your available space.

Cost and Commitment

How much does in-home personal training cost?

At Forged Home Fitness, private 1-on-1 sessions are $130/hour. Senior sessions are available at 30 minutes ($70) or 60 minutes ($130). Student athlete sessions are $105/hour. Group sessions (2-3 people) are $205 total.

Is there a contract?

No long-term contracts. You pay per session. Most clients train on a consistent weekly schedule (2-3 sessions per week), but there’s no lock-in commitment.

What to Expect

What happens at the first session?

Your first session is a free evaluation. Your trainer comes to your home, learns about your goals and health history, assesses your current fitness level and movement quality, and outlines what a program would look like. It takes about 45-60 minutes.

How often should I train?

Two to three sessions per week is the sweet spot for most people. You get enough stimulus to build strength and change your body composition, with adequate recovery between sessions.

What if I have an injury or health condition?

This is where in-home training shines. Your trainer designs around your limitations, not through them. Bad shoulder? We work around it while building supporting strength. Knee replacement? We’ll progress you safely. A CSCS-certified trainer is educated to work with medical considerations.

Can I train if I’m completely out of shape?

Absolutely. Most new clients haven’t exercised regularly in months or years. Your trainer meets you exactly where you are. The whole point is progressive, individualized programming.

Logistics

What areas do you serve?

Forged Home Fitness serves the MetroWest Massachusetts area including Needham, Newton, Wellesley, Natick, Wayland, Weston, Brookline, Concord, Sudbury, Lexington, Waltham, Framingham, and surrounding communities.

What’s the cancellation policy?

24 hours notice required. Late cancellations (under 24 hours) are charged at the full session rate except in genuine emergencies.

Choosing a Trainer

What certifications should I look for?

At minimum, look for a nationally accredited certification: CSCS, NSCA-CPT, ACSM, or NASM. The CSCS from the NSCA is the gold standard and requires a four-year degree plus passing a rigorous exam.

How is Forged Home Fitness different?

With Forged Home Fitness, Matt Doherty is your trainer. The owner. The person who built the business and stakes his reputation on every session. You get the same trainer, consistent programming, and someone who genuinely knows your body, your goals, and your story.

Ready to Try It?

The free evaluation costs you nothing but an hour of your time. No commitment. No credit card required. Just an honest conversation about your goals and a look at what in-home training can do for you.
